Ferry Tales: Traveling from Cancun to Isla Mujeres Made Easy

Before visiting Isla Mujeres we obviously arrived in Mexico to stay in Cancun. It was several hours of flight, previously stopping in Houston with United Airlines.

If you have not previously coordinated transportation, prepare to be attacked by packs of taxi drivers who will want to take you. I don't know what it will be like in Mexico but it is something we always try to avoid.

The good thing about Cancun is that the hotel zone is located minutes from the airport, so by noon they were already receiving us at the hotel.
Staying at the Iberostar in Cancun

At the entrance to the Iberostar, a golf cart was already waiting for us to take us to the new tower.

Already feeling the heat, the wind and the noise of the sea brought a big smile to our faces, as it must happen to more than one person and when we saw what the hotel was, I assure you that that smile was even bigger.

Everything decorated with light colors, with a marine theme and a smell of new, since it was recently inaugurated.

The good thing is that our room was already ready, all with sea views and a jacuzzi on the balcony, what more could you ask for….

We walked around a few times, changed and immediately went down to have lunch, not because we were already using the all-inclusive but because we were truly dying of hunger.

The hotel has only one restaurant called La Barca where they have buffet lunch and à la carte meals at night. But while staying at this hotel you can use all of the other Iberostar hotels upon reservation, which we already chose at the time of check-in.
The beaches of Cancun – cleaner than the Mayan Riviera

From there straight to the beach, pool, drinks, snack, this was our first day, of rest and complete enjoyment of the hotel, since it was truly worth it.

Not only today we can say that all the hotel facilities, services and staff are excellent but also that it is located in Playa delfines, for us and many the best in Cancun, works in its favor.

In all the days we were there we did not find any algae in the sea except for those that accumulated on the sand and were cleaned every day. I don't know if it was luck or that beach is like that every day, but we were delighted with this issue that has so many people worried.

Clearly we weren't going to line up to take the photo so that's why the appearance of a leg behind my back
Ferry to Isla Mujeres

The next day we decided to start our first visit outside the hotel, which would be Isla Mujeres.

After an incredible breakfast we left towards the main and only avenue of circulation in the hotel zone. Here you will also see what the buses that say R1 or R2 ahead will pass. They can take any of them and have 2 options. Or take these buses to any of the ports in the southern part of the hotel zone from where the ferries leave to Isla Mujeres but more expensive.

Or go for the economical version and take these buses to the ADO terminal on Av. Tulum and from there take another bus to Puerto Juarez. They save almost half of what they pay in other ports.
Bus to Puerto Juarez
What happened to us is that we asked the driver and since he saw that we were with other tourists in the same situation, he said, I'll take you directly to Puerto Juarez so you don't have to take another bus. But…. Please note that generally things are not done out of kindness in these cases, and since he did not ask for a tip, someone from a cooperative was waiting for us to sell us a tour.

The driver did not want to stop at the port and continued for about 500 more meters, and as we had already read about this cooperative that is still cheap but in short it is a tour, when we got off the bus we acted like we did not understand anything and we started to walk to the port.

We arrived before the ferry left, which departs every half hour to Isla Mujeres as well as from Isla Mujeres to the port.

The company that carries out the transfer is Ultramar and here we leave you the page so you can check prices and schedules.

In just 20 minutes we were on the island, a super pleasant trip, without movements and even with a music show included.
Diving in Isla Mujeres

We arrived at Isla Mujeres and they were already waiting for us from La Casa del Buceo to go do 2 dives in the area. The first would be The Underwater Museum and the second would be the Manchones reef. The experience was excellent, the operator, instructors, equipment, everything was perfect! The value is approximately 90 dollars for the 2 dives as long as they are certified, otherwise the baptismal dives are usually more expensive.

We spent around 2 hours diving and, already very hungry, we headed back towards the pier area to head towards Playa Norte, the most famous on Isla Mujeres.
What to do in Isla Mujeres

Something that many do and we ignore is renting the golf cart or motorcycle to go around the island, the truth is that it didn't catch our attention much and we preferred to do more beach but we don't know if it's really worth it. We believe that if you arrive early in the morning with time it is good to be able to do so.

If you come from an all-inclusive hotel with a private beach, the north beach will seem like Mar del Plata in the middle of the season, but it's a matter of finding a little place because the beach is truly worth it.

For lunch there are many options on the beach itself, several places offer lounge chairs for an extra 200 Mexican pesos or if you want lounge chairs you will have to pay 100 for each one plus 100 for the umbrella. However, between 5 and 6 p.m. they already start to lift everything.

In our case, after eating we did nothing but enjoy the beach, drink some smoothies until we saw the beautiful sunset, one of the best places to watch it in Mexico.
Return from Isla Mujeres to Cancun
Since the ferry to Puerto Juarez returns until midnight, we were not in a hurry, this is another advantage of taking it in Puerto Juarez.

It was 8 pm and we were already at the port with the luck that the bus that we had to take to the hotel area was just coming, otherwise there are some buses with greater frequency that end up leaving a little more because they leave you at the terminal and there you have to return to take another bus.

We got off early from the hotel, at the La Isla shopping plaza, because we had to pick up the car that we would use for the next 3 days. We rented it directly from Alamo Argentina and the truth is that everything worked wonderfully, without them charging us anything extra. nor that they wanted to take advantage of us for some other issue.

So if you are going to be in Quintana Roo and even more so in Cancun, Isla Mujeres is one of the essential places to visit for its beautiful beach and sunset. Of course, you have to have a full day or at most going out after lunch to be able to enjoy as much time as possible.
